PROJECT II

ERICDAVIES

A Global Species Pool for the WWF Temperate Broadleaf Mixed Forest Ecoregion

One of the key concepts this project is based on was developed in the following paper by Olson et al. (2001). Here, Olson describes the concept of ecoregions: "recurring patterns of ecosystems associated with characteristic combinations of soil and landform that characterize that region."

Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World: A New Map of Life on Earth (Olson et al. 2001)

The temperate broadleaf and mixed forest biome encompasses a sizable portion of the northern hemisphere, with key regions in East Asia, Eastern North America, and across Europe. These can be seen along with the rest of the world's biomes in the above map. For a closer look at each key region, click the TBMF areas in North America, Europe, and Asia.

In addition, the official WWF web page on ecoregions can be accessed via the link below, which contains more explanations and maps detailing these areas.
